Gut-Feel CRO Changes Are as Likely to Hurt Conversion as Help It

Without A/B testing, store changes are based on assumptions. The assumption that adding a badge increases conversion, or that a different CTA color performs better, is often wrong. A/B testing removes the guesswork and gives you statistically valid evidence for every change made.

How We Run CRO Testing on Shopify

Our conversion rate optimization process in four steps:

Hypothesis

Ideas from data, recordings and customer feedback.

Prioritize

Ranked by expected impact and effort.

Test

A/B tested with enough traffic to trust the result.

Roll Out

Winners launched, results logged, next test started.

What's Included

Building a Testing Roadmap

A testing roadmap lists what to test, in what order and why. Conversion optimization testing works best on pages with the most traffic and the biggest drop-offs: product pages, cart and key landing pages.

Test areaExample test
Product pageReviews higher on the page
CartFree-shipping progress bar
Landing pageHeadline matched to the ad
CollectionDifferent product card layout

Traffic and Duration Requirements

How much traffic do you need for an A/B test? Enough that each version gets a meaningful number of conversions, usually hundreds, not dozens. Tests should run at least one to two full weeks to cover weekday and weekend behavior, even if the result looks clear sooner.

Landing page testing software and landing page testing tools for Shopify, such as Shoplift or Intelligems, handle the split and the statistics. We pick the tool that fits your theme and traffic.

Common Mistakes in User Experience Optimization

How user experience optimization improves conversion rates comes down to testing real problems, not opinions. See also landing page optimization and our Shopify conversion rate optimization.

A/B Testing FAQs

Prioritize by traffic volume and conversion impact: (1) Product page (highest traffic, direct purchase intent). (2) Collection page (large entry point). (3) Cart (high intent, close to purchase). (4) Checkout (direct revenue impact but limited Shopify Plus access without Plus plan).

Minimum 2 weeks to account for weekly seasonality. Minimum 100 conversions per variant for statistical reliability. For low-traffic stores under 1,000 monthly sessions, true A/B testing is not viable. We advise on alternative approaches for low-traffic stores.

We use Google Optimize (while available), Convert.com or native Shopify theme variant testing depending on the nature of the test. For checkout testing, Shopify Plus is required for native support.

One test per page at a time. Running multiple tests on the same page produces conflicting data. We maintain a prioritized test backlog and sequence tests logically.

It depends on the page, traffic and how big the problem is. Many tests show no clear winner, which is still useful. Steady testing over months is what builds lasting gains, and we report every result honestly.

With a testing app that splits traffic between two versions of a page or theme, then measures which one gets more orders or revenue.

Enough for each version to get a meaningful number of conversions, usually hundreds. Low-traffic stores should test bigger changes on their busiest pages.
