The Problem with Most Product Descriptions
Most Shopify stores write feature lists, not benefits. "Made from 100% cotton" tells customers what it is. "Stays soft wash after wash — you will reach for it every time" tells them why they want it.
The SOAR Framework
S — Situation: Who is this product for and when do they use it?
O — Outcome: What does life look like after purchase?
A — Appeal: What makes this product the best choice?
R — Reassure: Address the top 1–2 objections.
Step 1: Know Your Buyer
Before writing, answer: What problem does this solve? What words does my customer use to describe the problem? What are they afraid of (wrong size, low quality, returns)? Write in their language, not yours.
Step 2: Lead with the Outcome
Your first sentence should describe what the customer gets, not what the product is. Bad: "High-quality leather wallet." Good: "Never lose a card again — ultra-slim design holds 12 cards and fits in any pocket."
Step 3: Address Objections
Identify the top 2–3 reasons someone would not buy and address them in the description. Common objections: sizing (add a size guide link), quality (add materials + care), delivery (add lead time).
Step 4: Format for Skim Readers
Use bullet points for key features, short paragraphs (2–3 sentences max), and bold text for the most important benefit. 80% of visitors skim before deciding to read. Make the skimmable version compelling.
