Why GA4 Matters

GA4 replaced Universal Analytics in July 2023. If you are still using the old analytics, you are missing purchase events, conversion paths, and enhanced ecommerce data. This guide gets you set up in under 45 minutes.

Step 1: Create a GA4 Property

In Google Analytics → Admin → Create Property. Select GA4. Add your website URL. Note your Measurement ID (starts with G-).

Step 2: Connect to Shopify

In Shopify Admin → Online Store → Preferences → Google Analytics → paste your Measurement ID. Enable enhanced measurement. This enables page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, and site search automatically.

Step 3: Set Up Purchase Tracking

Install the Google & YouTube app from the Shopify App Store. Connect your Google account. This enables server-side purchase events — more reliable than client-side tracking and bypasses ad blockers.

Step 4: Build Your Key Reports

Create custom reports for: traffic sources by revenue, conversion rate by device, top landing pages by transactions, and checkout funnel (Reports → Monetisation → Checkout Journey).

Step 5: Set Up Goals and Alerts

In GA4 → Configure → Events → mark "purchase" as a conversion. Set up email alerts for unusual traffic drops or conversion rate falls. Review your data weekly, not daily — daily variation is normal.
